In celebration of Arbor Day and being recognized as a Tree City USA, the Town of Knightdale held its annual Arbor Day festivities on Friday, March 22, at Knightdale Station Park. The Town reaffirmed its commitment to trees and the social, fiscal, and environmental benefits they bring to the eastern Wake County town. Knightdale Public Works provided assistance during the tree planting ceremony, and the Two Green Thumbs Garden Club also attended and planted a tree in honor of the event. Additionally, Mayor Jessica Day gave remarks, and a representative of the North Carolina Forest Service presented Knightdale’s recertification package as a Tree City for the 23rd time.
“We are honored to host this tradition each year,” said, Donna Goodman, Senior Planner - Long Range & Sustainability for Knightdale’s Development Services department. “To celebrate 23 years as a Tree City USA designee is something we’re very proud of, and we will work diligently to earn the recognition again next year.”
Knightdale Mayor Jessica Day agreed. “Sustainability is a key pillar of our Strategic Plan,” she said, “and we will do all we can to be good stewards of our community resources, including our trees. They not only beautify our town, but they also provide so much more that help us live our best, healthiest lives. Our citizens and environment deserve nothing less than our dedicated attention to them.”
The Arbor Day celebration this year was held in congruence with National Creek Week, which is a time aimed at raising awareness of the need to protect and maintain natural water sources. Other activities for Creek Week such as a litter sweep and shredding service scheduled for March 23 were rescheduled for April 13th due to inclement weather.
