Fred Gilbert Averette was born August 2, 1931 in Oxford, N.C. He loved growing up on a farm and became a member of the local 4-H Club at a young age. After graduating high school, Fred joined the United States Air Force. He actively served his country for 4 years during the Korean Conflict. In 1956, he began working at North Carolina State University in the Department of Soil Science. After 37 years of a job he truly loved he retired in 1993. Fred was a faithful member of Bethlehem Baptist Church in Knightdale. He served on the Deacon Board and was on numerous committees for many years. He was also a member of the Knightdale Lions Club and enjoyed helping those with visual disabilities.
