Herbert Vann Pair, Jr., was a life-long resident of Knightdale. In 1944, at the age of 17, his father gave permission for him to join the U. S. Navy. His basic training took place at Bainbridge, MD. His unit was preparing to ship out to the west coast en route to an invasion of Japan when the atomic bomb ended WWll. He often said that the bomb may have saved his life.
Mr. Pair was a member of Knightdale Baptist Church for 40 years. He served as deacon and Sunday School superintendent, and he taught Junior boys in Sunday School. He was a founding member of Knightdale Volunteer Fire Department, serving as Dept. Chief. He and three others went to Maine to pick up the department's first pump truck. He was elected to two terms on the Knightdale Town Council.
Mr. Pair died on May 31, 2022, and is buried in the New Knightdale Baptist Church Cemetery.
