Edwin Thomas “Tom” Smith was the son of Arcal and Alma Griffin Smith. He attended NC State College for Agricultural Education before joining the Army Air Corps. Lieutenant Smith was commissioned as a pilot in May 1944. He was ferrying a P-51 from Hunter Field, Savannah, GA to his home base of Hobbs, New Mexico when his plane crashed. This crash resulted in Lieutenant Smith's death. He was survived by his wife, Carolyn Cates Smith, and a daughter, Mary Ann Smith.
